You knew exactly what to say

You knew exactly what to say
What arguments to use
You knew what promises to make
And how to make me stay
What wounds to press, what scabs to pull
You told me I was important, cherished and unlike no other
You told me you would forever be by my side
You told me we could be a family, I could have a home

You told me many things in those early days
So many beautiful lies, or were they your deepest desires?
But when the tide turned, when the first storm came
You chose to run and hide
Leaving me to fend for myself, in the midst of the battlefield
Of a war, I never wanted to have

You knew exactly what to say
What arguments to use
You knew what promises to make so that I would stay
Saying you were confused, it wouldn’t happen again
But the next time came and once more I was left astray
Fighting for something which was never meant to be
Fighting so hard for what I’ve craved all my life

You knew exactly what to say…
